Establishment and Purpose
In the 166th Meeting of the Academic & Administrative Committee of UIU, held on 22 November 2017, a decision was taken to establish the Institute of Development Studies and Sustainability (IDSS). As endorsed in that meeting, IDSS is committed to interdisciplinary research and education, teaching, and collaboration with government, NGOs, and the private sector to strengthen the science–policy–practice interface for advancing sustainable development in Bangladesh and beyond.
The Institute aims to advance knowledge of sustainable development through its social science graduate programs, Postgraduate Diploma Programs (PGD), and outreach activities for the broader community. IDSS is committed to managing and expanding the interdisciplinary major in Development Studies and Sustainability by offering fellowships, scholarships, and research and study opportunities through collaboration with national and international universities, NGOs, UN organizations, and private-sector partners. Finally, the Institute contributes to UIU’s vision of becoming a center of excellence in teaching, learning, and research in South Asia and beyond.

Objectives
- To study political, social, economic, humanitarian, environmental, and other challenges of Sustainable Development in Bangladesh and beyond.
- To undertake and promote research on development issues, ethnic diversities, gender, migration, locally led adaptation, water governance, food security, climate change adaptation and mitigation, locally led initiatives, and cultural studies.
- Undertake empirical research to bridge the gap between science-policy- practice.
- Extend international academic exchange, research coordination and collaboration to foster global network of scholars.
- Organize national and international seminars, workshops, conferences and disseminate research outputs.
Governance of IDSS
IDSS at UIU is functioning within the general rules and regulations of UIU. Its day-to-day activities and functions are governed under the leadership of the Director, Professor Dr. Hamidul Huq.
